Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO DBT) is an evidenced-based treatment targeting excessive inhibitory control or overcontrol (OC), a temperament trait which has been linked to conditions such as refractory depression, anorexia nervosa and other restrictive eating disorders, and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD). OC coping can also be linked to problems such as social isolation, avoidance, poor interpersonal functioning, loneliness, perfectionism, rigidity, risk aversion, and difficulty expressing emotions.

RO DBT specifically works towards building three important aspects of psychological well-being: openness to new experiences, flexibility in emotional and behavioral responses, and social connectedness. RO DBT is based on an integration of cognitive, behavioral, and somatic principles with the goal of identifying and regulating rigid coping mechanisms which were often developed to manage developmental challenges early in life, but have become problematic in adulthood.

Our Approach to RO DBT

The RO DBT program at Camden Center consists of individual therapy, skills classes, and skills coaching between sessions within the RO DBT framework. Additionally, each patient has access to the numerous other medical, psychiatric, psychotherapeutic, and somatic modalities available at Camden Center. Each patient’s treatment plan is individualized to their specific clinical needs at each point in the trajectory of their recovery at Camden Center. Patient’s within the RO DBT program may also participate as needed in any of the other specialty programs at Camden Center including our Addictions Program, Eating Disorder Program, and OCD Program.
